Schatz announces nominees for military service academies

U.S. Senator Brian Schatz has announced the names of 38 students he nominated to attend the nation’s four military service academies. Three hail from the Big Island.

Nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy were Robert Pule, New Mexico Military Institute/Saint Louis School (Hilo); Caleb Schoen, Kamehameha Schools – Hawaii (Pepe‘ekeo); and Lance Thornton, Konawaena High School (Kailua-Kona). Pule was also nominated to the U.S Merchant Marine Academy.

“It is an honor to nominate these students to our nation’s military service academies,” said Senator Schatz. “These nominees truly represent the very best of Hawai‘i, and I commend them for their commitment to serving our country.”

The academies are highly selective post-secondary institutions that will evaluate the nominees and determine which will be given Offers of Appointment for the Class of 2027. Upon graduation these students become commissioned officers in the U.S. Armed Forces.
